Day 1

The Lost Colony of Roanoke

One of the reasons that I chose Kill Devil Hills to stay at was that it is right next to the center where they teach all about the Lost Colony of Roanoke.  We had a bit of a stormy day, so it was a perfect time to go to the Roanoke Island Festival Park.

They had several sites where they demonstrated how the colony lived.

We saw the  Elizabeth II, a representational 16th-century English merchant ship from the 1585 Roanoke Voyage.

Inside the center they had a 'Roanoke through time' exhibit.  I could have stayed a little long reading through all the history, but the boys felt like the weird costume-picture stands were the most impressive thing there.

They did have this really cool pulley demonstration of how adding each additional pulley distributed the weight.

And...back to the cardboard cutouts.

On our way back home we passed this charming restaurant, (although we never got a chance to eat there.)

We also saw people crabbing.  Emmett had expressed that he really wanted to learn how to crab, so we stopped by a little store and picked up a cage and some bait.

We weren't successful on our first attempt.
